Different kinds of castles

O castelo do São João
e
O Templo do Recife

Yesterday we visited the amazing Instituto Brennand. Besides the beautiful grounds that surround the vast collection of art (paintings, sculptures, furniture) this place has a great collection of arms, from small swords and guns to canons, stored in a castle full of warfare displays, and ready to tell a tale of bravery and courage...imagined by the visitor's of this castle. The medieval displays are very impressive,in  almost every corner you run into a knight.

Today we visited the Temple of Recife. Some of these temples, like Manti, Salt Lake, and Logan also look like castles. But instead of displaying warfare equipment for visitor's to enjoy, members of the LDS Church go there to receive spiritual strength, and recharge their spirits with courage and commitment to live the Gospel more fully. The Temple of Recife was build in 1996, and is the 101st operating temple of the Church. A few of us took a taxi there, and our taxi driver said that the Mormon Temple is one of the most beautiful buildings in Recife. I like to think that the temple has become an attraction to visitor's and a pride of the locals, just like the Instituto Brennand and its castle has.

Our filed trip took us to the Centro de Cultura of Recife, where we found all kinds of locally produced art. clothing, and a variety of souvenirs for a reasonable price. We also visited a church, Nossa Senhora do Carmo and walked around the plaza, where more vendors ttried to lure us into buying food, clothes, watches, DVD's and anything they could sell. A true mercado, full of busy people trying to sell and buy.
