"Let's dance! Put on your red shoes and dance the blues" Thanks Bowie, but you have no idea how much dancing really goes on a festa junina in Recife. t is heavily centered on "forró", a type of dance typical of the Northeast. We learned in class and in our reading that two main theories explain the origin of "forró":
1. Parties put on by the railroad companies that included an English sign: "For All"
2. In the 19th century the word "forrobodó" also meant partying with dance and music but there was a connotation of violence associated with this word.
Throughout time, the word "forró" sticked with the northeasterners and today we participated in one of these parties/dances.
We gathered at CCJ and watched them dance the quadrilha and then we shared a few of our American games and songs and we provided entertainment with our very own artists, Berkeley and Joe.
"Here comes the sun", "Como eu quero" and "Only a dream in Rio".
Joe sang two of his originals in Portuguese and I need to find out the names of the songs to put on here:)
They both did a great job and it was really fun. I think the kids at CCJ enjoyed it as well.
You can't have a festa junina without food, and today was no exception. There were a variety or corn based dishes and we added American food to this table: popcorn balls, brownies, hot dogs wrapped in dough and chocolate chip cookies. I had a great time!
