7/3/12
We toured the American School in Recife and had a fun time
mingling with a group of English students. After an awesome presentation about American
sports, by a few of our classmates, our group was ready to play sports with the
visiting students! We played football, baseball and basketball, all of it coedJ It
was fun and and educational.
Then we visited Diaconia who in turn took us to GTP, an
organization that helps HIV and AIDS carriers adjust to somewhat of a normal
life. The representative for GTP (Valdmir) gave us an overall idea of what
these people go through as they are victims of prejudice and lack of financial
support to live their lives. It was interesting to hear the word “corruption”
mentioned again, as Valdmir talked to us about promises that politicians don’t
keep when the subject of helping programs like GTP’s comes up. He said that not
only are they being denied help from local government programs but also international help has been decreasing since Brazil’s economy was ranked 6th in the world. Despite the reason why some of
the people here at GTP acquired AIDS or HIV, it was sad to understand the innumerous
hardships they go through to live a hopeful life.
